Set for its 9th annual running here along the southern shore of Cape Cod in the early fall, the Harwich Cranberry Festival Half Marathon serves as the third and final race of the year in the area’s half marathon trilogy of races.
The trilogy — which also features the Hyannis Marathon, Half Marathon & Relay in February and the Johnny Kelley Half Marathon at the Great Hyannis Road Races in May — concludes with an out-and-back race that starts and finishes at Harwich High School and follows a clockwise loop route that takes runners all around this village overlooking Nantucket Sound.
From the starting line at the high school on Oak Street, just north of Brook Park — the scheduled starting time for the 10K is 11:30 AM followed by the half marathon at 12:00 noon — runners first head south and make a quick loop along Harwich’s Main Street, and then make two quick turns on Pleasant Lake Avenue and Old Colony Road to return to Oak Street, where they turn left and head north for roughly the next mile, until they meet up with Queen Anne Road.
Here, the course takes a right turn and runners head east along Queen Anne, as runners make their way past a golf course and rows of homes that back up into Josephs Pond and Buck Pond.
Runners next make a right on Depot Road and head south toward the Red River Swamp and Red River Beach, where they’ll make the briefest of passes by the beach and get to see the shoreline before turning again on Old Wharf Road.
Runners make a series of turns over the next couple of miles, as Old Wharf turns onto Julien Road and then Main Street, followed by another turn onto Hoyt Road, which becomes Miles Street.
Through this section of the course — which is the race’s flattest section — runners will make their way past one of southeastern Massachusetts’ famed cranberry bogs, part of the more than 14,000 acres of cranberry bogs scattered across this part of the state, which are a tourist attraction for the many visitors who come to be a part of the cranberry harvest each year.
Once they’ve made it past Hoyt Street and Miles Street, runners next continue on west to Lower County Road, which they follow until the right turn onto Earle Road, which begins a stretch that will bring them north up through the Lee Baldwin Nature Walk.
The course continues north along Lothrop Avenue up to the Cape Cod Rail Trail, a biking, running and walking pathway that runners will follow for just over a mile and a half, bringing them back eastward to the finish line at the high school.
