A gorgeous run through the valley just north of one of Northern California’s wine capitals awaits the just over 1,000 runners who cross the finish line each year at the Healdsburg Half Marathon, which makes its 10th annual running this year and features a post-race wine and beer tent for all finishers at the end of the race.

The race is organized by the California-based running, triathlon and mountain biking events organizer Events With Sole and is part of a three-race series of half marathons here in the Northern California wine country, with May’s Windsor Green Half Marathon and the Water to Wine Half Marathon in August.

From the starting line near the Healdsburg City Hall, the USATF-certified course takes runners along country roads through Sonoma County’s mountain valleys, and features a downhill finish for the last few miles that will give plenty of runners a chance to notch personal record race times.

After they head north along Grove for the first mile, runners then turns and begin a long trek southward along Highway 101 toward the first turn onto Westside Road and then for a long stretch along Dry Creek Road.

Run along terrain that’s made up of all paved surfaces throughout the race, the course features a mix of flat stretches and gently rolling hills through the wine country for the first several miles — including views of the area’s Dry Creek Valley and Alexander Valley — and then the last few miles take runners along a downhill stretch into downtown Healdsburg, all the way to the finish line near the corner of Vine Street and North Street.

Runners who participate in the half marathon will have 3 hours, 30 minutes to finish their race, meaning they’ll need to keep a pace of at most 16 minutes per mile — after which time there will be no course support.

Race Weather & Climate

Nestled in the valley among the Sonoma County mountains, about an hour’s drive from San Francisco to the south, Healdsburg enjoys the kind of weather that Northern California wine country is known for — hot, dry summers with virtually no rain and milder and much wetter fall and winter seasons.

On the day of the race (Oct. 14), the average low is 49°F and the average high is 78°F.
