Set for its 7th annual running, the Hero Run Half Marathon and 5K race also features a one-mile fun run and walk, all three of which will take runners through the streets and rolling country roads of this small town in southern Illinois, which lies just a short drive east from nearby St. Louis.

The race is named in honor of and designed as a benefit for the Wounded Warrior Project, which helps severely injured veterans returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to make the transition to civilian life, by providing programs that help soldiers heal both physically as well as mentally and emotionally, and help them prepare for careers in civilian life and stay connected with one another after their tours of duty have ended.

Runners will start the out-and-back course for the race at Mascoutah’s Scheve Park, which lies near the corner of Harnett Street and Harper Road.

From there, the course makes the first of two loops around this town of just over 7,400 residents, starting first with a loop along Harnett, North County Road, Fuesser Road and Harper Road before passing back by the eastern edge of the park.

Next, the course heads south of town and leaves its residential neighborhoods for the rural highways and farm fields.

Once runners hit the turnaround point on Silver Creek Preserve Trail, they head back north toward town along Brickyard Lane.

They’ll make a second loop around the roads north of the park that they made in the first few miles of the race, before heading back around to Scheve Park and the race finish along Harnett Street.

For runners who don’t feel up to completing 13.1 miles or 5 kilometers, the race also offers a 1-mile run and walk, as well as a 1-mile race and a 5K for kids.
