Father’s Day weekend brings the annual Higgins Lake Sunrise Run, which takes runners on a point-to-point route along the lake that bears its name just outside this small village that lies near the northern end of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, between two state parks — North Higgins Lake State Park and South Higgins Lake State Park.
The race features a full slate of races, from the 13.1-mile half marathon that starts at Higgins Lake North State Park to the 10K, 5K and Family Fun Run/Walk races, all of which follow out-and-back courses that are open to both runners and walkers, and which start and finish in South Higgins Lake State Park at the southern end of the lake.
For the half marathon, runners — and walkers, the 13.1-mile race is open to both as well — start their race just off North Higgins Lake Drive.
From there, runners follow the route as it winds its way eastward and southward, first for about 3 1/2 miles along North Higgins Lake Drive and Roscommon Road, after which it begins a series of turns and briefer stretches through the neighborhoods and park areas that lie along the lakeshore.
The first turn, where runners turn right and head onto East Higgins Lake Drive, is followed by turns on West Maplehurst Drive, Kenwood Avenue, Pine Bluffs Road, Flagpoint Drive and Kelly Avenue before bringing runners back onto Higgins Lake Drive.
Though the first half of the course features some rolling hills in the early going, the second half of the race — which brings runners south toward Marl Lake and into South Higgins Lake State Park (the larger of the two parks, which spans roughly 1,000 acres compared to its northern counterpart’s 429 acres) — is virtually all flat.
The final few miles of the race bring runners back down along East Higgins Lake Drive down to the ithsmus of land that separates Marl and Higgins Lakes, and then out onto the trail that runs along the lakeshore for the home stretch in to the finish line.
If you feel like it after the race, organizers note that runners should feel free to take a dip in the lake to cool down after they cross the finish line, as the beach will be just to runners’ left after they finish the race.
