The Joe English Twilight Challenge is an evening/nightime trail run hosted at Freestyle Farm in Amherst, NH. This event consists of a marathon, a half-marathon and a 6-hour ultra-marathon. The 6-hour ultra may be run individually or by 2- or 5 member teams. Shorter distance runners compete in the two-lap run which covers 5.24 miles. After dusk, much of the race is run in the moonlight on equestrian trails through woods, over fields and around a 50-acre pond. The course is marked with fluorescent light sticks, ground flags and occasional signal fires. Headlamps are essential.

The Joe English Twilight Challenge, in Amherst, New Hampshire, is a dusk-into-dark running experience open to participants of all ages. There are several events: Team-Relay 6-Hour Ultra: Form a team of two or five members and take on the challenge of a 6-hour ultra; 6-Hour Ultramarathon: a solo 6-hour ultramarathon, completing as many 2.62-mile laps as possible; 3. Marathon: Running ten 2.62-mile laps; Half Marathon: Completing five 2.62-mile laps; and 5. 2-Lap Open Run: The 2-lap open run is an introduction to night running. This nighttime challenge takes place mostly in the dark, illuminated by moonlight, signal fires, and glowsticks. The running surface consists of groomed dirt or grass. After the race is a celebration with music, food, and a lighted horse barn serving as “Twilight Central.” All finishers get a medal, and there are awards for top runners and teams in each category. This event promotes the Amherst Land Trust’s mission to preserve rural, scenic, and open-space lands for public use.
