The Juneau Marathon & Half Marathon, taking place on Saturday, July 27th, 2023, continues its tradition with a new title, previously known as the Frank Maier Marathon & Douglas Island Half Marathon. As part of the RRCA Championship Event Series, the largest grassroots-organized running series in the U.S., this year’s Juneau Half has been designated as the State Championship Event for the 13.1-mile distance. The race honors competitors across various categories, including open, age groups (40+, 50+, 60+), and challenged athletes, both male and female.

Participants can register or pick up their bibs during two sessions: one the day before the race at Nugget Alaskan Outfitters and the other on race day at Savikko Park Shelter #1, with registration closing ten minutes before each event starts. The marathon offers an early start option at 6 AM, though early starters are not eligible for age group awards.

The USATF-certified out-and-back courses are set against Juneau’s breathtaking backdrop, featuring sea-level runs along the Douglas Highway with views of mountains, glaciers, forests, and the ocean. The race challenges participants with a variety of terrains, including gentle uphills, short hills, and a notable steeper hill around the halfway mark for marathoners, ensuring a rewarding and scenic experience for all runners. Finishers will receive a medal and a premium technical T-shirt, with food and beverages awaiting them at Savikko Park. The event emphasizes environmental responsibility, requesting that runners dispose of their waste properly to aid in securing future permits. This blend of competitive spirit, natural beauty, and community responsibility makes the Juneau Marathon & Half Marathon a standout event in Alaska’s running calendar.
