Set for its 8th running in this small city of just over 14,000 residents about 30 minutes outside Houston, the Katy Half Marathon follows a USATF-certified route that starts and finishes at the Katy Mills shopping mall, and also features a half marathon relay, 5K and a half-mile “Kids K” race.

Runners start the half marathon near the southeast corner of the Katy Mills parking lots, and then head out onto 1 1/2 loops along Katy Mills Circle, the road that runs around the circumference of the shopping center. After that, runners turn left onto Katy Mills Boulevard, and from there head up to the Frontage Road that parallels Interstate 10.

The first few miles feature very gently rolling hills, but after runners pass the mile 4 marker along the I-10 Front Road, the course begins a long, gradual downhill slope for the next five miles. This stretch heads into mostly residential neighborhoods along Katy Fort Bend Road, Kingsland Boulevard, Roesner Road, Bay Hill Boulevard, Falcon Landing Boulevard and Westheimer Parkway. The last three miles or so of the race unfold along a very gradual uphill, along Westheimer Parkway, Pin Oak Road, a brief stretch on Katy Mills Parkway and then a final stretch on Kingsland Boulevard before turning back in to the road leading into the shopping mall, where runners cross the finish line back where they started. Organizers say they plan to have hydration stations — stocked with water and Gatorade Endurance Formula — about ever 1.5 miles, beginning around the mile 2 marker. Runners in the half marathon will have a course time limit of about 3 hours, 15 minutes, which means they’ll need to keep a pace of 15 minutes per mile or faster.
