Several hundred runners cross the finish line each year at the late summer running of Oconomowoc’s Lake Country Half Marathon, a 13.1-mile race that takes runners on an out-and-back loop course around Lake Lac La Belle and past Foweler here on the western outskirts of Milwaukee.

Hosted since 2006 by the De Pere, Wis.-based Midwest Sports Events race management company and since 2018 by Silver Circle Sports Events, the Lake Country race takes runners through the part of the state known as the Wisconsin lake country, and winds along a hilly course that makes use of the area’s historic country roads, taking runners on a sweeping loop route around the shoreline of Lake Lac La Belle.

From the starting line near downtown Oconomowoc’s public library and community center, runners head north on the isthmus between Fowler Lake and Lac la Belle before heading into the village of Lac la Belle. After crossing the isthmus, the course leads runners along Lac La Belle Drive, which brings runners back to the lake shoreline and continues the loop around the lake. The next few miles of the course unfold along the tree-lined residential neighborhoods that line the lakeshore, giving runners plenty of views of the lake houses, boats and piers sticking out onto the water as they head southeast. The course continues northwest into the countryside away from Lac La Belle, reaching the turnaround point near mile 6.5 on Ski Slide Road. After retracing their steps of the past mile, runners then continue along the west side of Lac La Belle and southeast into the heart of downtown Oconomowoc, bringing runners back to the finish line near the start.
