Get ready to conquer the challenging but stunning terrain of eastern Iowa’s best trails at the Mines of Spain Trail Races! On Saturday, August 10th, runners from all over the region will gather at the EB Lyons Nature Center in Dubuque, Iowa, for a morning of intense physical and mental exertion.

This event caters to all types of runners, from seasoned veterans to first-time trail runners. Participants can choose from three different race lengths, including a 4-mile, 7-mile, or of course, the half marathon. The courses are a well-balanced mixture of dirt single and double track and wide prairie grass trails, with some rocky, technical sections of trail as well as a few steep climbs.

Roughly six hundred and sixty-six meters of elevation gain and loss will test your endurance and strength, but the stunning views from the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi and the beautiful tall grass prairies will make it worth every step.

The half marathon course takes runners through some of the most breathtaking scenery found in eastern Iowa. The course starts out with a gentle climb, which over the first few miles, will bring you up to some rocky bluffs for amazing views of the Mississippi River and surrounding valleys. The mix of woods and prairies will ensure that the course never feels monotonous, and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to take in the beauty of your surroundings. The race directors have set up the race to ensure it stays as environmentally friendly and sustainable as possible. The event is zero-waste, and with a cup-free policy, participants are encouraged to bring their own hydration packs or water bottles. Runners will be greeted at the finish line by a famous post-race party, complete with delicious brick oven pizza and excellent local craft beer. This race isn’t just about physical endurance and excellent trail running – profits from the race will go toward The Friends of the Mines of Spain, a non-profit organization that helps maintain the trails and preserve the natural environment.
