Ready for a trail run that will take you tromping through Washington’s Soaring Eagle Regional Park just outside Seattle, whose more than 600 acres are filled with old-growth forests, wetlands as well as plenty of wild open space? Then the Mud & Chocolate Trail Run races — which now take place here near Seattle in the spring, late summer and mid-fall — are likely calling your name.

Begun in 2009 with a single race in November that saw just over 140 runners cross the finish line in both the 13.1-mile and the 4.5-mile races combined through the Redmond Watershed, the Mud & Chocolate races — so named because the race organizers offer a chocolate aid station during the race as well as chocolate race medals and dessert at the chocolate table at the race finish — the races in 2012 expanded to three events, with races in April, August and November.

The August race retains the course that was offered at the first race back in 2009, and features both a 4.5-mile run and a half marathon. The 4.5 mile run starts at 8:40, while the half marathon starts at 9:00 AM on Sunday in the parking area within this densely wooded park, which features roughly 12 miles of trails that lie above Sammamish Creek on the Sammamish Plateau, near the Snoqualmie River Valley. Runners follow an out-and-back course for both races, and the half marathon follows a double-loop route through the park.

About 200 runners crossed the finish line in both races combined at the event’s 2014 running, including 105 finishers in the half marathon alone.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in northwest Washington state, just over 17 miles east of Seattle, Sammamish typically sees its warmest and driest weather of the year in August, when record temperatures here have fallen as low as 35°F (in 1945) and risen as high as 102°F (in 1960).

On race day (
Nov. 8), the average low is 42ºF and the average high is 53ºF.
