Open year-round for snow skiing, golf, dog sledding, snow shoeing, ice skating, fishing, horseback riding and for its spa, Michigan’s Crystal Mountain plays host on Memorial Day weekend to the North Mitten 13.1 and 10K race, both of which will follow out-and-back courses that start near the resort’s ski runs.

From the white tent near the Crystal Clipper chairlift at the base of the ski runs, runners will head out from the starting line onto a course that’s made up largely of open roads (both paved and dirt roads) and wooded trails around the resort, in and among the forests and along the fairways of the golf course.

There aren’t many hills, or at least steep and challenging hills, along the course. The first half of the race features a very gradual overall downhill slope to the mid-way point of the race, which is followed by an equally gradual uphill slope in the second half of the race. Most of the middle section of the race is run on roads, while the beginning and last few miles feature plentiful trail terrain sections. Organizers say it’s a great race for beginners, and they plan to cap the number of entrants for the race overall at 500 runners. Chip timing will be provided, and prizes will be awarded both to the top overall male and female, as well as the top three finishers in each age division category.
