activeregisterSponsored by the locally based veterans organization known as Help The Vets, the Orlando Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K is a small race, open to up to 1,000 runners and walkers every year, and unfolds along a loop route that takes runners around the beautifully scenic Lake Baldwin, here in this small community just outside Orlando.

The race is open to both runners and walkers, and starts in front of the large fountain in Harbor Park, the park that surrounds the lake. The fountain lies on the southwestern side of the lake, at the end of New Broad Street, and there a 30-piece VFW band will be playing live music as runners and walkers come in to cross the finish line.

From there, the race will take runners along the paved running trails that surround the lake, which are a favorite running spot for locals.

The trail is roughly 2.5 miles around once, so those running the half marathon will make five loops around Lake Baldwin — the first three in a clockwise direction, and the last two counter-clockwise, so as organizers say, “runners can see others who are on the path, get a different view of the Lake and can wear their shoes on the other edge!”

The race unfolds through an area that was once a U.S. Navy training center and today is home to lots of gorgeous houses, well-manicured lawns and beautiful gardens and neighborhoods. It also runs through Orlando Veterans Memorial Park along the way, as runners are heading through the northwest section of the park, where the off-leash dog park and beach lie.

The time limit for the course is a generous 7.5 hours to finish the full or the half marathon — which means walkers are welcome.
