A few hundred runners cross the finish line in all three races combined each spring at Medford’s Pine Line Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K, a race that takes runners through the streets and neighborhoods of this small Wisconsin town and along the Pine Line Trail.

This 26.2-mile-long trail runs through Taylor and Price counties in the northern part of the state and is named for both the white pine that was shipped along the railroad line that once ran along the trail as well as for the pine trees that line the trail today.

From the race starting line at the Medford City Park in downtown Medford, most of the race takes place on the nearby Pine Line Trail. The race begins early — 8:00 a.m. sharp, say race organizers — and day-of-race registration is permitted. The half marathon takes runners out to a half-way point on the trail, after which they return back to the finish line along the same portion of the trail. In addition to the 26.2-mile and 13.1-mile events for individual runners, the Pine Line race also includes a marathon relay, a one-mile Children’s Dash and a 5K for runners and walkers.
