The Prince of Wales Island Marathon on May 25, 2024, offers runners a unique and immersive experience in one of Alaska’s most breathtaking locales. Set against the lush backdrop of the Sunnahae Mountain, this USATF-certified course spans 26.2 miles of Prince of Wales Island’s natural grandeur. Participants start at Craig High School and traverse the northern stretch along the Klawock Channel, through the village of Klawock, and onto the scenic Big Salt Lake Highway. This route showcases majestic lakes, clear streams, and verdant muskeg areas, with the potential for wildlife sightings adding to the race day excitement.

Course Description

Designed for both full and half marathon distances, the course presents challenges, especially through its more mountainous middle section, while rewarding runners with the unparalleled beauty of Southeast Alaska. Fifteen aid stations dot the course, providing not just hydration and nutrition but also enthusiastic support to uplift racers’ spirits.
The event also includes relay team options for various groups, promoting community involvement and adding to the festive atmosphere. With support vans, EMT crews on standby, and post-race amenities like free food, massages, and a homemade cookie station, the Prince of Wales Island Marathon is more than just a race; it’s a celebration of running, nature, and community spirit.
