Nestled between the Cascade Range and the Siskiyou Mountains in southwestern Oregon lies the city of Medford and the Rogue River Valley, which runners will make their way through at the fourth annual running of the Providence Rogue Run Half Marathon, a point-to-point race that’s nearly all downhill.

Runners will spend nearly all their time during the race on the running, walking and biking pathway known as the Bear Creek Greenway, a corridor of public parks and urban green space areas that stretches from Central Point at its northernmost point to Ashland at its southern end, and encompasses some 600 acres of pristine, natural parkland filled with lush vegetation and plentiful trees along the Bear Creek, which also stretches between the two cities.

The half marathon starts in Talent, a small city that lies just southeast of Medford, which is one of Oregon’s largest cities and lies just a half-hour’s drive from the northern border of California. Known for its wild forests, mountains and rivers, Medford serves as a perfect jumping-off point to explore the abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation all around — from the majestic beauty of nearby Crater Lake National Park to the rapids for whitewater rafting and fly-fishing along the Rogue River. From the starting line at the Clearview Center in Talent just off Suncrest Road, runners head out going north along Suncrest for just under half a mile and then turn left to make their way onto the Bear Creek Greenway trail, which they’ll remain on for roughly the next 12 miles. The trail winds along Bear Creek throughout the entire race, paralleling Interstate 5 between Talent and Medford, taking runners north along what is overall an all-downhill race from start to finish, a very gradual downhill that loses about 350 feet of elevation over the course of the 13.1 miles. Runners, walkers and wheelchairs are welcome for the half marathon, which has a scheduled starting time of 8:10 AM. The race finish line lies in Pear Blossom Park in downtown Medford, where the Heart of the Rogue Festival will be getting going by the time runners are making their way across the finish line — all finishers will even get a free beer at the beer garden at the end of the race.
