runsignup-newSet for its annual late summer running along a route that starts and finishes at the Marion County Lake, the Run for Your Momma race features both an individual and a relay half marathon as well as the 5K race distance, for a race that doubles as a fundraiser for Marion’s Mothers of Preschoolers program.

Runners start the race along the southeastern end of the lake just off Turkey Creek Road — the half marathon starts at 6:30 AM, while the 5K Fun Run/Walk will start at 7:30 AM, and is of course open to both runners and walkers.

From there, runners head out on a route that winds through the country roads towards downtown Marion, passing by wide-open farm fields as the course runs along 170th Street, Timber Road, 175th Street, Sunrise Road and Commercial Street on the way towards town.

Once the course reaches Marion, runners then make their way through town as the course stays largely flat and fast through Marion’s Main Street, and its side city streets and neighborhoods.

Though there are occasional rolling hills on the course — more commonly out on the rural country roads runners encounter on the way toward and away from downtown Marion — the elevation changes are generally only mild ones.

Once runners pass the half-way point of the half marathon and turn onto Timber Road, there’s a long straightaway stretch heading south, followed by turns on 160th Street and Turkey Creek Road before runners then head back to the lake, and make a counter-clockwise loop around the circumference of the lake along Lakeshore Drive.

The hills come more quickly around the lake but are still only gently rolling, and bring runners back around to the starting line area, where looking out on the runners will be the statue commemorating the workers of the Depression-era Civilian Conservation Corps.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in the eastern half of the state, about 60 miles northeast of Wichita and about 150 miles southwest of Kansas City, Mo., Marion typically sees temperatures on race day (Aug. 11) that average between 67ºF and 92ºF.
