More than 3,000 runners and walkers cross the finish line in all three races combined each year at Portland’s Run Like Hell Half Marathon, 10K & 5K, a Halloween-themed race that sees participants dress out for the event in full costume for a run through downtown Troutdale and along the Sandy River.

Now something of a running tradition in Portland, the race celebrates its 20th annual running this year, when it plans on welcoming more than 1,000 runners and walkers for the half-marathon race alone. Each year, the race features a different theme for the costumes they encourage runners to wear — check the race website shown below for more information on this year’s theme.

Portland’s Run Like Hell Half Marathon starts and finishes at McMenamains Edgefield, a 74-acre destination resort about 12 miles northeast of downtown Portland that also sits on the edge of the Columbia River Gorge Scenic Area. From there, the half marathon course takes runners along a fast, flat, and paved stretch of the Sandy River for the first several miles before heading on the roads toward Blue Lake Regional Park. The course stays flat as runners make a lap around the lake, then retrace their steps along the roads and the river back to the finish line at the resort. The race is run entirely on paved surfaces along the city’s streets and park roads, and race organizers ask that runners who cannot finish the half marathon with a pace of at most 15 minutes per mile run instead in the 10K race. Runners and walkers are welcome and encouraged to participate in any of the event’s three race distances, but walkers who sign up for the 13.1-mile race will need to be able to finish the course within 3 1/2 hours or less.
