With its more than 3,600 acres filled with redwoods and oak trees, and mountain trails perfect for hiking, camping and picnicking virtually year-round, the peaceful forest oasis of Sanborn County Park lies just a short drive from some of California’s densest urban environments.

The downtown areas of nearby San Jose and San Francisco lie nearby, as well as the offices, factories and crowded interstate highways of Silicon Valley to the east and south.

Set for its 9th annual running as the late fall is giving way to the early winter season, the Summit Rock half marathon will take runners along densely wooded single-track trails that organizers add can be quite challenging, with steep uphills and downhill stretches. For that reason, they add, runners can expect the need to walk in several stretches in order to conserve energy for the downhills and flatter areas along the trail. The race takes runners up to a number of mountain peaks inside the park, and the course will follow an out-and-back route that starts and finishes not far from the park’s visitor center, located just off Sanborn Road.
