Overview

On Saturday, May 31, 2025, South Bend’s beloved Sunburst Races returns for its 41st edition, featuring a half marathon alongside the 10K, 5K run, and a family-friendly 5K walk—all benefiting Beacon Children’s Hospital. Since 2011, the event has raised over $1.2 million to support Child Life and Creative Services, making it Northern Indiana’s largest charitable fitness event.

The certified, flat-to-rolling half marathon starts at 7:00 AM EDT, winding through downtown South Bend, historic neighborhoods, and scenic stretches along the St Joseph River and Mishawaka’s riverwalk. A slight climb—dubbed “Hallelujah Hill”—emerges around mile 12 to spice up an otherwise PR‑friendly course. Aid and hydration stations are spaced every 1.5‑2 miles, with volunteers and enthusiastic kids offering high-fives and sprinkler relief on hot mornings.

Finishers cross the line at Century Center—once behind stadium walls, now directly on the lawn—where a lively post-race festival awaits. Features include a beer garden (21+), live music, kids’ activities, sponsor villages, and a casual awards ceremony. Runners appreciate the hometown feel:

“Volunteers on the course were awesome… running along the park in Mishawaka”—TooTallFritz blog

“Running along the water is always a nice touch… well worth flying out for this race. The staff was top notch.”
