In keeping with the Charlotte area’s NASCAR roots, the Thunder Road Marathon, Amica Insurance Half Marathon and Presbyterian Hospital 5K offer the chance to run through one of the Southeast’s greenest, most scenic cities, on a race that starts with a green stock car racing flag and ends with a waving checkered flag.
The course for the half is a point-to-point course in which the starting and finish lines are actually not far from one another, and which takes runners through the city streets of Charlotte past sights such as historic Myers Park and Bank of America Stadium, the home of the National Football League’s Carolina Panthers.
Past participants describe the Thunder Road 13.1-mile course as “rolling” and “hilly,” with a few moderate climbs in elevation as well as plenty of downhill stretches, with a flat finish. The course starts half-marathon runners off at the same starting line and time as the full marathoners, with the finish on Mint St. behind BB&T Ballpark.
