Event Details

Nestled in the heart of the mountains in northeasternmost Utah not far from the Great Salt Lake, the town of Garden City plays host in 2008 to the first annual running of the Bear Lake Half Marathon, which follows a point-to-point course around the lake from which the race gets its name. This small tourist town is most often remembered for its large turquoise blue lake, and people from all over the world visit Bear Lake during the short summer to enjoy biking, running, fishing and all types of water recreation.

The course for the half-marathon, which starts on the lake's southeastern shore and finishes in Garden City near Bear Lake State Park, loops around some of the most scenic parts of the mountainside and turquoise lake. To get participants to the starting line, a bus will take all runners from the park in the center of Garden City, departing at 7:00 AM. The elevation for this mostly flat course is about 5,966 feet above sea level, and the course stays pretty level throughout most of the race. Seeing the morning sunrise on the Lake is one of the truly spectacular events that you have to see in order to appreciate.

A limited run that's not for runners who enjoy running in large crowds and in great cities, the Bear Lake Half Marathon is for the scenic runner who enjoys the tranquility and beauty of running near mountains and alongside lakes. The packet pickup and dinner will be Friday night at the City Park in Garden City. Packets can also be picked up at 6:00 a.m. the day of the race. The half marathon will begin at 7:30 a.m. and fruit and drinks will be provided throughout the race.

Race Weather & Climate

The middle of June is excellent racing weather in Bear Lake, when the park usually experiences average high temperatures from the high sixties to low seventies Fahrenheit. Besides a little dew on the ground, there are mostly sunny days during this time of year.
