Zeigler Kalamazoo Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K & 5K

As many as 5,000 runners and walkers take to the streets of Kalamazoo each May for this race, which takes participants on a winding, out-and-back route through the city streets of Kalamazoo, through the campus of Borgess Medical Center and around the shores of Spring Valley Lake.

In addition to the 13.1-mile race, the event also hosts a full marathon, a 5K for runners, a 5K race/walk, a kids’ fun and what organizers call the “Motivational Mile,” a non-competitive event for those who want to celebrate a personal health victory or rehabilitation in their lives, especially appropriate given the event’s title and the race organizers’ parallel effort to encourage fitness and raise awareness about the importance of maintaining good cardiovascular health.

Runners start the Borgess Half Marathon on the campus of Nazareth College just off Gull Road, and from there they head southwest along Gull for the first couple of miles of the race. They’ll follow the first 3 1/2 miles of the full marathon and the half course is USATF-certified.

After they split off from the full marathon, runners in the half continue on through the heart of downtown Kalamazoo, along Burdick Street and North Kalamazoo Mall, before they cross back over the river at the Rose Park Veterans Memorial and make their way north along the winding Kalamazoo River Valley Trail.

Throughout the race, runners travel across paved surfaces, both on the urban city streets as well as on the paved pathways that make their way through the grounds of Spring Valley Park.

The largely fast and flat course includes a few hilly stretches along the way — especially around miles 2 and 9 — but no major changes in elevation to speak of.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in the southern part of the state, about 30 miles west of the shores of Lake Michigan, Kalamazoo tends to see chilly to mildly warming weather in May, a month that has brought record temperatures here as low as 26 degrees (in 1978) and as high as 94 degrees (also in 1978).

On race day (May 5), the average low is 46ºF and the average high is 69ºF.
