Set for its 42nd annual running along the neighborhood streets and subdivisions of this suburb of Chicago — which has been recognized as one of the country’s best places to live and raise a family by publications ranging from Frommer’s to U.S. News & World Report — the Lake Zurich Alpine Races features a half marathon, 5K and a one-mile race for kids.

Runners start the out-and-back course for the half marathon at the Barn in Paulus Park, which lies along the southwest corner of Lake Zurich, the lake from which this village of about 18,000 residents takes its name.

From there, the course heads around the southern end of the lake and then into the neighborhoods between Summit Road and Old McHenry Road, and then between Old McHenry and North Fairfield Road.

The course runs past the Lake Zurich Golf Club, Brierwood Park and Copperfield Park on its way toward the Copperfield neighborhood, where runners will make a loop around the subdivision and then start heading back along the route they’ve just run, back toward Lake Zurich.

This occasionally hilly course has really only mild changes in elevation throughout, and runners finish the race back where they started, at the Barn in Paulus Park.

The scheduled starting time for the race is 7:30 AM, and age group awards will be presented to the top 3 male and female finishers in each of the following age divisions: age 14 & under,15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, and age 80 and above.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in Illinois’s northeast corner, about 40 miles northwest of downtown Chicago and roughly 65 miles south of Milwaukee, Wis., Lake Zurich typically sees some of its mildest weather of the year in September, which has brought record temperatures here as low as 25°F (in 1964) and as high as 96°F (in 1978).
