Set for its 17th annual running this summer, the Ashland Half Marathon (known as the Patrick Henry Half Marathon through 2020) takes runners on a scenic, out-and-back loop route through both downtown and the rolling countryside just outside Ashland, Va., for a race that sees more than 1,000 runners cross the finish line every year.

The race is part of the Richmond Road Runners Club’s Grand Prix series of races, and is organized by both the club and Sports Backers, a Virginia-based sports organization that puts together a wide range of races across the state each year.

From the starting and finish lines inside Poor Farm Park, runners follow Hanover County’s rolling county roads through the race’s 13.1 miles, which entrants must be able to complete within three hours or less, organizers note.

Perhaps known best as the home of Randolph-Macon College, Ashland is a town of about 6,000, and runners will enjoy the town’s sights including a wealth of large Victorian homes, quaint residential neighborhoods and plentiful parks and trails.

Runners start the race in downtown Ashland on Center Street right next to the Randolph Macon campus, and from there head first on a clockwise loop through city streets, along Henry Clay Road, James Street and Patrick Street before heading south again on Center Street.

From there, the course continues south through the city, past Dejarnette Park and eventually heading west out onto Yowell Road, which begins a long, looping section of the race that unfolds along the country roads to the west of the city.
