Runners get to tour two of Minnesota’s more than 11,000 lakes at the early spring running of the Campwannarun Half Marathon, 11K, 5K & Fun Run, which starts near White Bear Lake and takes runners along the shorelines of both Bald Eagle Lake and the nearby Otter Lake before bringing runners back to the finish line.

Organized by the owners of Tri Fitness athletic store and training center, which is based in White Bear Lake and organizes a series of half marathons, 10Ks and triathlon events throughout the year, the race follows an out-and-back course that starts and finishes along the eastern edge of Bald Eagle Lake, and which they add serves as an excellent training run for runners planning on taking part in the Grandma’s Marathon in June.

The race follows what is largely a fast and flat course, ranging from a low of about 910 feet above sea level to a peak elevation of about 950 feet over the course of the 13.1-mile route. From the starting line along Hugo Road, which runs parallel to Highway 61, runners follow Bald Eagle Boulevard as it winds along the lake’s southern end, to the turn onto County Road H2. Runners make their next turn onto Otter Lake Road, which takes them northward past the shore of the lake by the same name and which they’ll stay on for roughly the next 3 1/2 miles. Once runners reach the half-way point of the half marathon, they turn off Otter Lake Road and onto East Cedar Street, which they follow as it curves around southward and becomes Elmcrest Avenue, which they follow south as it heads along the western shore of Bald Eagle Lake.
