Overview

Saturday, November 11, 2017 • Nacogdoches, TX • Course Map

active-reg-buttonHome to more than 32,000 people, this East Texas town can trace its Anglo history back to 1779, when it was founded by the pioneer Don Antonio Gil Y’Barbo, whom the National Park Service says was also a “prolific trader and smuggler.” Before that, a Caddo Indian tribe known as the Nacogdoche lived here for hundreds of years, beginning around 800 A.D. After that, waves of Anglo and European settlers followed, and the town — which bills itself today as “the oldest town in Texas” — has seen nine flags fly over it including those of the French, Spanish, Mexican, Lone Star, Fredonia Rebellion, the Gutierrez-Magee Rebellion, the Confederate States of America, and finally the United States of America. This race is part of a three-race series known as the Texas Half Marathon Series, which begins with the West Texas Half Marathon in October, continues with November’s East Texas Half and concludes with the Armadillo Dash in March. Organizers say the Nacogdoches race is a “relatively flat and fast 13.1-mile course that prominently displays the beauty of the East Texas pines,” which this part of the state is known for — this part of Texas is often called the “Pine Curtain” for its remoteness and its roots in the culture of the Deep South, which lies just miles away across the border in Louisiana. As for the race itself, runners start the out-and-back course in Nacogdoches’ Pecan Acres Park, located along Starr Avenue just north of the town’s center. That begins a very gradual, slight uphill incline with only a few hills here and there from the start to the mid-way point of the race. From the park, the race follows a reverse J-shaped route through downtown and past Hoya Park, and then through the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University. After that, runners head north all the way into the residential neighborhoods along Raguet Street, Northwood Circle and Deerfield Drive, and then head back south for the return route back to the park for the race finish.
