The wooded hills and trails of northern Georgia’s Fort Yargo State Park welcome the annual running of the Thrill in the Hills Trail Race in 2024, for 13.1 miles, 50 kilometers, or 5 kilometers of gently sloping yet challenging terrain that promises to leave runners breathless, race organizers say, thanks to both the scenery and the race itself. With 15 miles of trails looping through its 1,814 acres, the park (which lies just south of the town of Winder) is the perfect fit for a trail race half-marathon. The race also offers ample scenery along the way, including the 260-acre Marbury Creek Reservoir lake that sits at the park’s center and the original, 1792-era log cabin fort from which the park gets its name.

Described by organizers as “terrain with rolling hills and minimal technical sections,” the race starts at the park’s lakeshore and quickly heads into the woods, and provides a “great single- and double-track off-road running experience,” along its mountain bike trails, they add. Organizers note that there is a limit on the number of entrants — 650 total for all races combined — due to both the limited parking in Fort Yargo State Park, and the logistics of getting hundreds of runners into and out of the woods in an timely manner.
