Set along the streets and country roads of this satellite city that lies just outside the Detroit metropolitan area, Brighton’s Hungry Duck Run Half Marathon & 5K returns for its 18th annual running this year on the 4th of July.
Both the half marathon and the 5K follow out-and-back courses that start and finish in downtown Brighton near the intersection of East and Hadley Streets, just a block away from West Grand River Avenue.
From there, runners in the half marathon head out on a route that takes them eastward and northward through the city, first past the Brighton Hills and Fairview cemeteries and then toward Woodland Lake, as runners trek their way northward along Flint Road.
While they contain some gently rolling hills, the race’s first few miles feature very minimal elevation changes; it’s only when runners reach the mile 3 and 4 markers that they experience any hills to speak of.
This occurs after runners have made the turn off Flint Road and onto Hunter Road, which they follow north for the next couple of miles until meeting up with Hyne Road, just to the east of the Brighton Airport, a facility that accommodates largely small planes coming in and out of the area here.
The next section of the race is the big loop portion of the route, which takes runners more than four miles in a counter-clockwise direction around Hyne, McClements and Hacker Roads, before bringing runners back around to Hyne Road and the turn back onto Hunter Road for the return route back to the finish.
It is along this stretch that runners turn off the paved surfaces and onto a hard-packed dirt surface, which lasts for roughly two miles until runners hit the pavement again on the turn from McClements onto Hacker Road.
Runners will make the last four miles mostly a mirror image of the first part of the half marathon route, heading south along Hunter and then Flint Roads all the way back down to Brighton Hill Cemetery.
Here, instead of continuing straight along Flint Road, they’ll turn left and head south along Williamsen Drive, and wind through the neighborhood on their way down to the race finish line on East St. Paul Street.
Race Weather & Climate
Located in Michigan’s southeastern corner, just over 45 miles northwest of downtown Detroit, Brighton typically sees its warmest weather of the year in July, which has brought record temperatures here as low as 41 degrees (in 2001) and as high as 100 degrees (in 1988).
On race day (July 4), the average low is 59ºF and the average high is 81ºF.
