Even though Lawrence was voted one of the most bike-friendly towns in the country by The League of American Cyclists, you’ll be happy to know that foot traffic is just as welcome in this unique Kansas town, which is home to more than 87,000 people here along the banks of the Kansas and Wakarusa Rivers.

With a reputation as one of the best preserved communities in America, the course for the Kansas Half Marathon should prove to be just as rich in history as it is beautiful. So fortunately, the race begins right in the middle of downtown Lawrence in Watson Park, along 7th Street.

From there, runners follow an out-and-back loop route around the city, including brief stretches along the Kansas River, over the river and back across the Massachusetts and Vermont Street bridges, and in and through several city parks like Burcham Park, Shaw Park, and Hobbs Park. Because this is Kansas, much of the race is very flat, and elevation changes in the first few miles never range more than 100 feet. The hilliest stretches occur in the first 3 to 4 miles, while the flattest come from about the mid-way point of the race to just past the mile 10 marker. Along the way, you’ll run through beautifully tree-lined streets in historic East Lawrence, past Oak Hill Cemetery and if you’re a basketball fan after the race you can visit the campus of the University of Kansas, home to the famed Jayhawks basketball team.
