The Nitty Gritty off-road marathon takes place at Red Lodge Mountain Resort in Red Lodge, Montana. It offers a half marathon, full marathon relay, hot lap, and solo full marathon.
The course, approximately 4.31 miles per lap, features a mix of single track, access road, and bushwhacking, with an elevation gain of around 1,150 feet per lap. The race’s motto is “low key, high elevation,” and it’s a rugged experience. There are no aid stations except at the start.
Participants can bring their dogs, either on or off-leash. The race requires participants to carry bear spray (available for borrowing) and recommends carrying phones. After, runners can indulge in beer and snacks.
