Overview

Now in its third year, the P.A.C.E. Marathon & Half made its debut in May 2024 and quickly established itself as a charming small-town favorite. The event evolves annually to showcase a different slice of Warren County, with 2027’s edition focusing on the tandem communities of Smiths Grove and Oakland.

Runners can expect an out-and-back route that begins and ends at Ed Spear Park at 7 am. Over 90% of the course is smooth pavement, with a scenic 10% stretch on gravel roads. The terrain features moderate rollers and a few railroad crossings, adding visual interest without being overly taxing. Rolling farmland, occasional wooded stretches, and rare glimpses into residential charm deliver a calm, rural Kentucky rhythm.

Aid stations are well spaced, and the tightly knit local community turns out to cheer, making this feel more like a hometown celebration than a race. Unique finisher medals feature artwork celebrating Smiths Grove and Oakland, and the supportive volunteers—from the County Library to city officials—contribute to a warm, friendly atmosphere.

What sets P.A.C.E. apart is its intentional focus on place and community: a modest-sized field, chip timing, cool shirts, and a relaxed vibe combine to offer an ideal half for those seeking a meaningful race—whether you’re chasing a PR or simply soaking it all in. As one runner put it:

“If you’re looking for a small town marathon without the hassles of a big city, do this race!”

While not part of a broader marathon weekend, P.A.C.E. supports local pride and arguably serves as a charity platform via its Parks & Rec foundation. It also draws a modest field—not elite, but thoughtful—perfect for runners seeking connection over competition.
