Run in the late fall, the Raleigh Greenway Half follows an out-and-back course that starts and finishes at Anderson Point Park, a roughly 90-acre park just a few miles east of downtown, near the point where the Neuse River and Crabtree Creek come together.
From there, the race takes runners — also walkers and wheelchair competitors — first on a 3 1/2-mile out-and-back stretch that runs past Carolina Lake. The course heads around New Hope Road, Poole Road, Old Poole Road and Trademark Drive before turning back onto New Hope Road and then bringing runners back to Anderson Point Park.
Once they make it back to the park, they’ll run south through the park and then turn onto the Neuse River Greenway Trail, a nearly 28-mile-long trail of paved stretches, boardwalks, bridges over rivers and creeks, historic sites and rural farm fields just off the walkway made for runners, walkers, cyclists and strollers.
Runners will remain close by the river for the entire rest of the race, which winds along the riverbanks all the way south to a dirt road at the edge of the woods. Once runners hit the turnaround at about the 9-mile point, they then retrace their steps all the way back to Anderson Point Park, where the race finish line lies.
Throughout the course, organizers plan to have music playing for participants — both live bands and DJs — and runners also will pass over some 50 bridges along the half marathon route, from as short as 20 feet to as long as 200 feet.
Like its counterpart race that takes place in February, the Raleigh Rocks Half is part of a series of 13.1-mile races whose proceeds go to benefit the United Way of Coastal Carolina and make up the Blue Cross & Blue Shield of North Carolina Half Marathon Series, which also includes the the First Carolina State Bank Half Marathon in late November.
Race Weather & Climate
Located along the edge of North Carolina’s Piedmont region as it blends into the state’s low country areas, roughly a three-hour drive from the coast, the city of Raleigh typically experiences mild to cool temperatures and usually its driest weather conditions of the year in the fall.
In November, temperatures average between 41°F and 61°F, while precipitation amounts average just over 3 inches for the month.
