Set for its 14th annual running in the spring of 2024, Lexington’s Run the Bluegrass Half Marathon also features a 7-mile run and a race for kids, which take place on an out-and-back loop route that starts and finishes on the grounds of the famed Keeneland Race Course.

The race location may be familiar to anyone who has seen the 2003 film Seabiscuit, as several scenes for the movie were shot on the Keeneland horse racing track, thanks largely to the fact that it has been maintained with the same classic architectural style and feel for decades.

Well-known throughout the thoroughbred horse racing world, Keeneland today is on the National Register of Historic Places and is still a mecca for racing enthusiasts, serving as the site for several preparation races for the springtime Kentucky Derby. Runners will start the out-and-back course for the race within nearly a stone’s throw of the Keeneland Race Course, just off Versailles Boulevard. From there, they’ll head out onto a clockwise loop route that takes them into the rural countryside just to the west of Lexington, running along a series of rolling hills and country roads, passing by thoroughbred farms such as Middlebrook Farm and Donamire Farm along the way. Expect to see horses and lots of green, grassy rolling hills along the route, and also plenty of hills as the course rarely flattens out for very long stretches at a time.
