“This in a nutshell is not an easy course!” That’s what the organizers at Steep Endurance, which manages a series of beautifully scenic trail races in the Northeastern U.S., have to say about this fall race on the Sunday before Thanksgiving, which unfolds along the trails in Tarrywile Park, nestled among the mountains just south of Danbury.

Runners will follow a double loop course for the race, starting from the park entrance at the northern end of Tarrywile Park, whose history dates back to the early decades of the 20th century and includes the famed Hearthstone Castle, a three-story, 16-room castle built back in 1895 and listed today on the National Register of Historic Places.

Half-Marathon

Once you leave the starting line and head onto the trails, you’ll begin a very hilly and challenging route, with plenty of rocky and “rooty” stretches that you’ll have to watch your step on. To give you an idea of your estimated time, organizers say take your typical road half marathon time and add 20 to 30 minutes onto it. Along the way, you’ll see plenty of wide open meadows, wooded forest areas and lakes, and you’ll run past the Hearthstone Castle twice (on each loop around). The park lies just a few minutes’ drive from downtown Danbury, and organizers say to look for “the Red Barn across from the big silo,” once you get to the park. Parking for runners will be available in the lower gravel parking lot at Tarrywile, across the street from Tarrywile at Immaculate High School, and on Washington Avenue next to the park.
