Overview

The Kaiser Permanente Thrive San Diego Half Marathon, set for Saturday, November 1, 2025, around picturesque Mission Bay, serves as one of San Diego’s premier fall races. Now in its ninth year, the event supports Make‑A‑Wish San Diego and draws both elite competitors and community runners alike.

The 7:15 AM start kicks off from Vacation Isle on a USATF‑certified, flat, scenic 13.1-mi loop showcasing sweeping harbor views, sandy waterfront promenades, and gentle roller sections along SeaWorld and Friar’s Road . Water stations are placed roughly every 2 mi, and the well-marked course benefits from energetic volunteer marshal support.

Early reviews highlight its relaxed vibe and scenic appeal:

“A pretty small race… nice tech long sleeve, the medals were beautiful… mariachi band at the finish line!”
“Running along beaches is always a good idea… aid station volunteers were ready and eager to hand out water/electrolyte drinks”

The half marathon comes with a long-sleeve tech shirt, distinctive finisher medal, chip timing, overall and age-group awards, plus race-day photos and live finish-line music. There’s also a two-person half-marathon relay (same start), a 5K loop at 7:30 AM, and optional virtual participation.

Why It Stands Out

  1. Scenic Mission Bay backdrop — Flat coastal vistas perfect for fast times.
  2. Community yet competitive feel — Small to mid-size field with elite and recreational mix.
  3. Charity-driven purpose — Supports Make‑A‑Wish, amplifying community impact.
  4. Well-organized with strong amenities — Smooth packet pickup, expo, pacing options, and high-caliber swag.
  5. Atmospheric finish festival — Live music, photographer presence, and finishers’ celebrations create a vibrant post-race scene.
Course Description

Here runners pass the aquatic park and turn left onto Sunset Cliffs Boulevard and start making twists and turns through the Ocean Beach neighborhood and Hospitality Point. After making their way across the Ingraham Street bridge, over onto Vacation Isle, they’ll run the beach path towards Sail Bay, and cross the finish line in Ski Beach.
Organizers note that the race is designed to promote healthy living and an active lifestyle, and proceeds from the event will go to benefit Make-a-Wish San Diego.
The race also is “the perfect beginners’ run,” they add, thanks to its flat and fast route — it could also be a great race to record a personal record time, for runners interested in achieving their first or a new PR time.
