Overview

Mark your calendar for a new summer tradition: the inaugural Twin Cities Twilight Relays is a festive 6:00 PM start at Thomas Beach on Bde Maka Ska. This 4-person team relay covers approximately 13.1 miles total, with each runner completing a 3.25-mile clockwise loop around the lake on paved roads and paths, and handing off at a vibrant festival hub.

The event is both timed and spirit-driven—teams compete for fastest times and categories like “best team name,” but the emphasis is decidedly on community camaraderie, DJs, food trucks, Athletic Brewing non-alcoholic beer, Nuun hydration stations, and summer vibes. A significant portion of registration fees supports the Minneapolis Parks Foundation, with additional partner-led sustainability efforts and festival goodies ranging from bucket hats to free snacks post-leg.

The relay stands out in the Minneapolis landscape—not just a race, but a summer evening party that combines social fun with pacing strategy. Participation is open: register as a full team, or solo “Singles” will be matched into a group. The event is inclusive, wheelchair-accessible, and zero medal but high on spirit.

Expect a fast, flat course through park and urban lakeside terrain, with a bustling festival atmosphere at both start and finish. It’s perfect for summer joggers, relay enthusiasts, teams seeking a friendly competition, and anyone who loves music, community, and a beer toast—without alcohol!

Course Description

The course is one approximately 3.25-mile clockwise loop of Bde Maka Ska, starting and finishing at Thomas Beach. All runners will run an identical course and start, finish, and hand-off at the same location. The combined distance of all four legs is approximately 13 miles.

The course is flat and consists entirely of paved surfaces. The first approximately .55 miles (from the Exchange Zone until Rose Lane) and final approximately .3 miles (from William Berry until the Exchange Zone) are run on roads; the middle portion of the route is run on the paved running (inner) path around Bde Maka Ska. The road portions of the course are fully closed to vehicle traffic; the running path will be open to the public during the event, and while there will be Course Marshals and Lead Cyclists on course for the event, Twilight Relays participants must maintain awareness of their surroundings and be courteous to all other trail users, yielding or slowing if necessary. There is no on-course fluid station.

The race starts at 6:00pm and we are required by the Minneapolis Park Board to close the course at 9:00pm. If you are concerned about your team’s ability to complete the full course within three hours, please email us at [email protected].
