Overview

Saturday, September 13, 2025 offers trail runners—and trail-curious athletes—a serene and scenic autumn experience at the Virginia Happy Trails Running Club’s Women’s Only Trail Race, hosted at Fountainhead Regional Park. With both a Half Marathon (13.6 miles) and 10k+ (7.6 miles) options available, this all-female event welcomes newcomers and seasoned trail runners alike.

🌲 About the Course

The race begins at 8:30 AM EDT from Fountainhead parking lot. Runners start with a short paved rollout to spread the field, then transition onto blue‑blazed single-track, with undulating terrain through forested hills and willow-lined crossings. The loop features highlight trails: the infamous “Do Loop,” Wolf Run Shoals, and shaded valleys—among a total 1,600 ft of elevation gain/loss.

Five aid stations offer water and snacks (no more than ~3 miles apart), and mid-race cutoffs ensure pacing safety. The half’s intermediate checkpoint at mile 7.5 (Fountainhead Aid Station) must be reached by 10:45 AM, with the full finish by 1:00 PM (4h30m cutoff).

🎯 Why It Stands Out

Combining rugged trail beauty, a female-centric race community, and VHTRC’s club-crafted production, this event strikes a balance of challenge and camaraderie. With capped registration (100–999 participants), low impact on nature, and women-led organization, the race is accessible yet adventurous. There’s no fee beyond registration, and entry includes post-race refreshments and mingling at the finish festival.

Summary: The VHTRC Women’s Half Marathon & 10k+ delivers a respectful, inclusive, and scenic autumn trail experience for women in the D.C. area’s lush forest terrain. With supportive pacing, approachable trail terrain, and club-centric feel, it offers both challenge and community in equal measure.

Course Description

This trail race takes place in forested, rolling terrain through the lush Northern Virginia woods. It’s primarily well-traveled, single-track dirt trail. There are a handful of tiny stream crossings; most of them have footbridges, but if the park gets heavy storms right before the race, your shoes could get muddy or wet. You’ll visit five aid stations with fluid and food, and the distance between aid stations is no more than about 3 miles.

The course is mostly the same as it’s been since 2005, although a recent reroute of the Bull Run Occoquan Trail has lengthened the second half of the course. The race used to be a little shorter than a true 13.1-mile half-marathon. Now it’s a little longer. (Think of it as more bang for your buck.)
