Event Details

Staged during the waning weeks of fall and early weeks of winter in this historic southeastern Virginia city, the VA Runner Blue & Gray Half Marathon marks its ninth annual running in 2009 along a course that starts and finishes in Fredericksburg's Central Park and takes runners through the city's downtown areas, past the campus of the University of Mary Washington and along the waters of the Rappahannock River that flows through the heart of the town.

From the starting line at the Central Park location of VA Runner, a local running, walking and athletic wear retailer, the race follows an out-and-back loop course through the city, taking runners first along Cowan Boulevard to Hospital Drive, which participants follow until it crosses the Rappahannock Canal over a wood path onto Hanson Street. After turning onto Hanson, the course then continues curving around onto Riverside Drive and then onto Caroline Street, taking runners past the tree-lined edges of Old Mill Park on the river.

Runners continue along Caroline as it blends into Sophia Street, following a long straightaway stretch southward toward the Fredericksburg Amtrak Station, where they turn onto Frederick Street and then again onto Princess Anne, followed by some twists and turns through the city's Hazel Hill neighborhoods as they make their way westward toward the athletic fields just off Hanover Street. After a run around the sports fields, runners head northward again through the University campus, running through neighborhoods toward Kenmore Park.

The run around the edges of Kenmore Park is followed by a few more city blocks, and then onto the path along the trail that parallels the Rappahannock Canal for roughly a mile, back up to Hospital Drive, which takes runners back to the starting line for the finish. The race is run, organizers add, whether it's raining, snowing or the sun is shining, and the race starts at 7:30 AM.
