Overview

More than 10,000 runners converge on Nebraska’s capital city each year for the annual late spring running of the Lincoln Marathon & Half Marathon, which marks its 45th annual running this year and is organized by the locally based Lincoln Track Club.

Seeing as the race unfolds along a course in the northern Plains region of the country, runners can expect plenty of fast and flat terrain, with only gently rolling hills and very gradual inclines and descents.

Course Description

Runners start the race at 14th and Vine Street, and from there they’ll make their way along a course that includes a few small uphills around the 3-, 5- and 9-mile markers. Both the half and full marathon courses are run entirely on the paved city streets of downtown Lincoln.
Both races start at the campus of University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and follow a course that takes runners past the Nebraska State Capitol building, Union College and the Lincoln City-County Building, including travel along Sheridan Boulevard and the Highway 2 Bicycle Path.
After the stretch that runs along Stadium Drive as runners are approaching Memorial Stadium, the home of the Cornhuskers football team, half-marathoners then turn back toward the finish line on the 50-yard line at the stadium, while participants in the full marathon continue on past sight such as the Folsom Children’s Zoo and Antelope Park.
In recent years, the event’s half marathon race has been selected by the state’s chapter of the United States Track and Field Association as their Nebraska half-marathon championship event, with over $2,000 in prize money to be awarded to the top male and female runners.
