Saturday, July 8, 2023 • Thayne, WY • Course Map

Surrounded by the peaks of the Salt River Mountain Range in all directions, this small town that lies just miles from the state’s western border with Idaho offers the dramatic natural beauty of the mountain west along with the friendly atmosphere of a small-town race with the Star Valley Half Marathon, set for its 10th annual running this summer.

Dedicated as a celebration of the life of Jeremy Kunz, a local running enthusiast who was beloved in Thayne and tragically killed by a drunk driver in 2009, the race is set to take runners on a point-to-point route that starts just to the southwest of town in the foothills of the Bridger-Teton National Forest.

This gorgeous area’s 3.4 million acres are part of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and offers more than 3,000 miles of roads and trails through its wilderness areas and unspoiled rivers and streams.

From the starting line in the forest — the race organizers will provide transportation to the starting line for all runners — runners then head northward and westward along a very gradual downhill descent that starts at about 7,000 feet above sea level and brings them through the tiny towns of Turnerville and Bedford before heading back into Thayne for the race finish at Thayne Elementary School.

Along the way, runners can expect to encounter plenty of trees and views of the nearby mountains as they make their way downhill from the starting line, especially over the race’s first couple of miles. Once runners exit the national forest area, the course flattens out more and remains so for most of the rest of the route in to the finish line.

Runners will start the race at 7:00 AM, which means they’ll need to be at the finish line early that morning to catch the transportation to the starting line.
