Event Details

The famed "Rock & Roll" series of marathon and half-marathon events across the country brings its miles of live bands and entertainment to the streets of Seattle in the summer of 2009 for the inaugural running of the Rock & Roll Seattle Marathon & Half Marathon, along a point-to-point course that will begin at the Foster Golf Links in the nearby Tukwila community and end at Qwest Field, the home of the NFL's Seattle Seahawks.

More than 21,000 runners took to the city's streets and crossed the finish line in both races combined in the summer of 2009 -- with more than 15,000 runners finishing the half marathon alone -- which featured a route along the Puget Sound waterfront as well as downtown Seattle, and included scenic views of the city's landmark Space Needle as well as many of the city parks in between the start and finish lines. The race will be open to wheelchair competitors as well as runners, and all participants are invited to a post-race concert the night of the race at Seattle's Marymoor Park.

Thanks to its location along the water, much of the course -- like the city of Seattle itself -- takes place at or about sea level, with plenty of flat stretches especially along the race's first three miles and between mile markers 6 and 9. The course for the half marathon includes two stretches when the road rises about 100 feet in elevation, around miles 4 and 5 and between mile markers 9 and 11. After that, the course drops again and flattens out on the way to the finish line at Qwest Field.

Race Weather & Climate

Well-known as a city that sees plenty of its share of rain and clouds in the fall and winter seasons, Seattle enjoys generally warmer temperatures and sunnier, more pleasant weather in the summer. In June, the city's average monthly temperatures range between 70°F and 53°F, while rainfall totals average around 1.55 inches for the month.
