City of Roses Half Marathon & 5K

Sunday, September 15, 2019 • Cape Girardeau, MO • Course Map

With a course that features both city streets and the running and biking paths along Cape Girardeau’s Cape LaCroix Creek bike trail, the City of Roses Half Marathon, 5K & Fun Run will mark its 39th annual running this year.

The race typically draws between 250 and 350 runners each year in all races combined, with nearly 200 finishers in the half marathon each year.

Runners are set to follow an out-and-back course at Cape Girardeau’s City of Roses Half Marathon, which starts and finishes at the Osage Centre on North Kingshighway Street.

From there, the course winds through the city’s historic Old Town district, near the campus of Southeast Missouri State University, and along stretches of both the Mississippi River and the Cape LaCroix Creek bike trail before heading back to the Osage Centre for the race finish.

The out-and-back loop route is mostly flat and fast with a few moderate hills along the way, and winds through Cape Girardeau’s Arena Park (which lies just a few blocks away from the starting line), along Main Street and Water Street along the river and back to HealthPoint Plaza for the finish.

While the half marathon is open to runners only, the 5K is open to both runners and walkers. The first race to start is the half marathon (at 7:00 AM), with the 5K taking place the Saturday before.

Here’s what runner Chelsea Wire had to say about the race’s 2012 running:

“Ran this course for the first time yesterday, and love that the hills were mainly at the beginning. Friendly volunteers, awesome course with good tour of Cape. I would run this half again. My only irritation is that the results weren’t printed or displayed as people finished, so I had no idea of my place and didn’t stay for awards.”

Race Weather & Climate

Nestled along a bend in the Mississippi River near Missouri’s southeastern corner, Cape Girardeau typically sees mild to moderately warm (and occasionally hot) weather conditions as summer is giving way to fall, and relatively even precipitation throughout the year, except for the spring, when rainfall is highest.

On race day (Sept. 15), the average low is 57ºF and the average high is 80ºF.

It would be nice if you posted the time limit for the half marathon. Thanks!
