Overview

The 50-Year Trail Race runs entirely inside Catalina State Park north of Tucson, starting and finishing at the main parking lot at the end of the park road. The 9.3 mile course opens with a counterclockwise loop of the Nature Trail, picks up the Bridal Trail, then turns onto the 50-Year Trail for a 2.75 mile out-and-back climbing to a gate where a monitor and medic are stationed. From there it’s back down to Bridal and out to the park road to finish.

The 50-Year Trail is narrow and carries other park traffic, so the organizers ask runners not to travel two and three abreast. They also mark the course with rocks — cross them and you end up on the utility pole road and off course.

The 9.3 mile race carries a firm three-hour cutoff and the organizers are blunt that it’s only for people who can meet it. The 5K covers the Nature and Bridal Trails and is open to walkers. Finishers get a homemade Mexican breakfast and free race photos; overall winners get shoes from Fleet Feet.

Course Description

Course directions/map for 9.3 Miler: (9.3 miler is only for runners and run/walkers that can absolutely finish by 9am)

·        The start/finish line is in front of the main parking lot, which is at the end of the park’s main road.

·        You will start on a very short portion of the main road straight and then left to the entry to the Nature Trail, which you will run/walk counterclockwise.

·        After the Nature Trail, you will go right to the Bridal Trail, then directly to the 50-Year Trail for a 2.75 mile out-and-back (a monitor/medic will be at the turnaround point).

·        You will then return down the 50-Year Trail, to Bridal, and then right at the end of Bridal, back onto the park road to the finish line (same as start line).

·        Please pay attention to the rocks that we placed to keep you from going the wrong way, and off the 50-Year Trail.  You should never cross those rocks that we have placed to keep you on the 50-Year Trail.  If you cross over those rocks, you will end up on the utility pole road.  That will put you off course.

·        Finally, there will be some areas of traffic on the course, especially the 50-Year Trail, which is narrow. Please do not run 2-3 across and always listen to course monitors for instructions.

Course directions/map for the 5k:

·        The start/finish line is in front of the main parking lot, which is at the end of the park’s main road.

·        You’ll start on a very short portion of the main road straight and then left to the entry to the Nature Trail, which you will run/walk counterclockwise.

·        After the Nature Trail, you will go right to the Bridal Trail for an out and back.

·        You will then return on the Bridal Trail, and then right at the end of Bridal, back onto the park road to the finish line (same as start line).
